DEPARTAMENT OF  BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES

  
It incluides the Animal Facilities and Apiculture Sections.

Animal Facilities Section: it is in charge of  laboratory animals production: rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and rats. it is also concerned with the production of embryonic eggs. On the islands situated in the Rincón del  Bonete Lake (Department of  Tacuarembó) cattle are raised in relative isolation in order to be used in the differet laboratory tasks. Furthermore, it has an experimentla field in Aguas Blancas (Department of Lavalleja).

According to the agreement made,  a new animal facility was built with security conditions in which experimental mice free from specific pathogens (SPF) will be produced.

Apiculture Section: it is in charge of the diagnostic, apiculture diseases vigilance, sanitary certificatesfor export of honey and derived products, extension and teaching within a close relationship with the different apiculture country organizations.
