DEPARTMENT OF BACTERIOLOGY
  

This Departament is concerned with the diagnosis and research in animal diseases, he export and import controls on animals and biological  products, takes part in animal health programs and epidemiological surveillance and provides technical assistance and technology to official and private istitutions. It also takes part in Public Health programs.

The Deparment includes the following sections:

Isolation and Typification Section:  By means of bacteriological techniques, ELISA, direct immunofluorecence and PCR, it carries out the diagnostic of reproduction diseases, Salmonella spp., Brucella abortus, Brucella suis and Anthrax as  ewll as diagnostic of mastitis. Furthermore it supervises and controls private laboratories which are authorized to carry out milk quality tests.

Serology Section: It handles the serological diagnostic of  Leptospira spp. and Brucella spp. in the different animal species as well as the diagnostic as the diagnostic of human Leptospirosis. It deals with the diagnostic and typification of Mycobacterium through baciloscopy techniques, isolation and ELISA and the serological diagnostic of Brucella abortus, Brucella suis, Brucella melitensis, Brucella canis and Brucella ovis infection trough the techniques of Bengal Rose, Huddleson, Rivanol, 2-Mercaptoetanol, indirect and competitive ELISA and Immuno Diffusion in Gel Agar.

Biological production Section: It produces bovine PPD for bovine Tuberculosis diagnostic, avian PPD and specific antigens for Brucellosis diagnostic.
